Mystery of Color Management

Postby pike105 » Sun Dec 11, 2005 8:14 pm

Hi,

(I) I' using:
Nikon Coolscan V ED, calibrated with IT8
Silverfast Ai
Windows XPpro SP2
Photoshop Elements 4.0
LCD Monitor calibrated with ColorPlus Sensor/Software

(II) I want to:
Scan positivs and negativs, store them as large tiffs and get some printed out by external (internet) suppliers (--> printer is unknown)

(III) The current Color Management setting is
Load ColorPlus at Startup of the PC into graphics adaptor
Eingabe-Intern: ICM
Intern-Monitor: ICM
Intern-Ausgabe: RGB
Profil Eingabe: Nikon LS50.icm
Profil Intern: ColorPlus.icm
Profil Ausgabe: keines
Rendering Intent: Wahrnehmungsgetreu
Profil Einbetung: keine

Question: What is a good Color Management Setting for the my job
described in (2) ? With the current setting I don't see any repeatable results.
Thanks

pike105,

For the best results you need to speak with the external (internet) suppliers. They should be able to tell you what settings to use and in fact may have profiles they are able to send you.

RAG,

thanks for your reply.

My basic question is what to do with the monitor profile derived from ColorPlus measurement.

- Load ColorPlus at Startup of Windows into graphics adaptor
and /or

- assign it to Windows XP Display Options
and /or

- assign it to Silverfast under "Profiles internal"

Thanks

Ah,

Assign it in the Windows XP Display Options for sure. Then you set SilverFast "Internal -> Monitor" to ColorSync or ICM in order to allow the use of the screen profile you assigned to Windows when displaying images.

For more in depth information on Color Management in SilverFast take a look at their on-line documentation and/or purchase "SilverFast The Official Guide"

The on-line information is located here: http://www.silverfast.com/documentation/en.html

On-line documentation and/or "SilverFast The Official Guide" is well known to me, but do not answer my questions. This is why I post this question here.

Again:

What to do with the monitor profile derived from ColorPlus measurement?

- Load ColorPlus at Startup of Windows into graphics adaptor
and /or

- assign it to Windows XP Display Options
and /or

- assign it to Silverfast under "Profiles internal"

or anything else.

Profil intern: hier ist das Monitorproffil nicht geeignet, hier muss der interne Farbraum angegeben werden, empfehle Adobe RGB 1998

Profil einbetten:

Wenn es der Druckerdienstleister kann dann ja, Fragen was er will. "Normale" Fotodienste setzen hier oft stillschweigend sRGB voraus. Die Dias jedoch so einzuscannen und zu archivieren, empfehle ich nicht, da sRGB kleiner ist als Adobe RGB 1998
